Actress Felicia Day Thanks Fans for Support After GamerGate Comments Make Her A Target

Actress Felicia Day recently decided to share her fears and frustrations over GamerGate. The self-proclaimed game lover was then targeted by an alleged member of the GamerGate "movement," who posted her personal information online.

Day is now thanking fans for their support after tension grows over the anti-feminist gamer community.

The "Supernatural" star took to Twitter on Friday to address the situation.

The alleged GamerGate affiliate, who goes by the user name "gaimerg8," reportedly posted Day's personal e-mail address as well as her home address in the comments section of a blog post that the actress wrote on the controversial subject.

The comments section has since been removed from the web page.

In Day's post, the actress and avid gamer details her fear and anxiety over the GamerGate situation, a ruthless movement that has been targeting women in the gaming community.

"I love games, I love gaming. If it's Friday night, I'm not out hanging at a club, I'm diving into a new game I downloaded on Steam," wrote Day. "And I am blessed with the fact that my career is largely built upon that love, which I channeled into fiction so many years ago with "The Guild". If there's anything I'm proud of in this world, it's the fact that I've had people come up to me on the street and at conventions over the years to tell me that they feel confident to call themselves a gamer because of my work, where before they were ashamed. Hearing that kind of stuff has kept me going, against the mainstream, against all odds."

In the post, Day explains that gaming has always passion that has led her towards developing friendships with others. She calls the activity "a love for something unconventional. Outsiders in arms. We had an auto-stepping stone to hurtle over human-introduction-awkwardness, into talking about something we loved together. Instant connection!"

However, now out of "self-protection and fear" Day reveals that she feels the need to cross street when passing male gamers.

GamerGate has resulted in several women in the gaming community being threatened and harassed. Although many males have spoken out against those doing the harassing, it seems that only women who have criticized the GamerGate group are subjected to vengeful backlash.

For this reason, Day wrote that she initially chose to stay silent on subject, afraid of inviting online abuse into her life.

However, she resolved to express her concerns and anxiety in hopes that women would not be silenced in the face of unwarranted attacks.

"I realized my silence on the issue was not motivated by some grand strategy, but out of fear that the issue has created about speaking out," said Day, adding, "I have allowed a handful of anonymous people censor me. They have forced me, out of fear, into seeing myself a potential victim."

In her post, Day encouraged others to embrace the beauty of gaming and reject the divisive hostility that has seemingly scarred the gaming world.

"Games are beautiful, they are creative, they are worlds to immerse yourself in. They are art," wrote the actress. "And they are worth fighting for, even if the atmosphere is ugly right now.
