Twitter was conceptualized by a podcasting company called Odeo, then one of the founder Jack Dorsey suggested an SMS type of service to be utilized to communicate.

"..we came across the word 'twitter', and it was just perfect. The definition was 'a short burst of inconsequential information,' and 'chirps from birds'. And that's exactly what the product was," Dorsey was quoted as explaining about the Twitter in a Los Angeles Times in 2009.

The target of the partnership according to reports, target businesses customers to arm them with more data and tools.

Beta Wired quoted IBM's chief executive officer, president and chairman Ginni Rometty that the alliance with Twitter "will provide the company with powerful new tools to examine global trends both as a trend synthesizer and as an analysis platform for countless business professionals and consumers. Forging relationships with Twitter through IBM's cloud-based analysis platforms will enable clients to make rich, fully-informed business decisions by providing completely new classes of data.

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo meanwhile stated, " IBM is a global leader in enterprise transformation" and added, " the new alliance an important one in that it will completely revolutionize how business decisions are made from several different angles."

Reuters meanwhile reported that part of the partnership is the training of 10,000 employees to "consult businesses on the best use of Twitter data."

Under the alliance the data can now be gleaned based on geography, public biographical information and the emotion in the tweet.
