Jerry Seinfeld Autism Statements Not the First Time He Joked for Autism; Seinfeld and Bruce Springsteen Headlined Shows Giving Hope To Autism Community

Jerry Seinfeld autism statements are being lauded by the autism community. The comedian and co-creator, with Larry David, of 90s classic sitcom Seinfeld has long been a supporter.

Jerry Seinfeld is serious when he's talking about autism. On Thursday, Jerry Seinfeld sat down with Brian Williams on NBC's "Nightly News." While talking about Seinfeld's popular Web series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Williams called Seinfeld "the most restless man in comedy."

Seinfeld agreed, and said he believes he has autism. "I think, on a very drawn-out scale, I think I'm on the spectrum," Seinfeld said.

The 60-year-old comic explained "Basic social engagement is really a struggle. I'm very literal, when people talk to me and they use expressions, sometimes I don't know what they're saying. But I don't see it as dysfunctional, I just think of it as an alternate mindset."

Seinfeld added that comics are "the only kind of people that I feel completely relaxed around."

This isn't the first time Seinfeld has raised awareness about autism. He has been a large supporter of Autism Speaks, the largest autism science and advocacy organization in the U.S.

On Nov. 17, 2009, Jerry Seinfeld headlined the fifth Concert for Autism Speaks at New York City's Carnegie Hall. The night included a special appearance by Bruce Springsteen. The event was emceed by David Gregory of NBC News' Meet the Press. Jamie Foxx, Ellen DeGeneres, Tina Fey, Conan O'Brien, Seth Rogen, Martha Stewart, Katie Couric, Meredith Vieira, Glenn Close, Celine Dion, Will Ferrell, Edie Falco, Troy Aikman, and Harry Smith also appeared.

On Friday, the Autistic Self Advocacy Network and Autism Speaks applauded Seinfeld for his admission but warned that the comedian might be oversimplifying the disorder.

Dr. Alex Kolevzon is the Clinical Director, Seaver Autism Center at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai wrote in the Daily News that "Autism spectrum disorder is characterized by social and language impairments in addition to restricted and repetitive behaviors. ... Autism spectrum disorder is also considered a chronic disorder and affected individuals continue to be affected throughout adulthood even if symptoms improve over time. ... The core feature of autism spectrum disorder is a social deficit, but social deficits can also exist in many different types of problems.

Seinfeld just launched the fifth season of his Web series "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee."
