U2 was forced to cancel their scheduled week-long residency on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" after the band announced that its frontman Bono had been involved in a bicycle accident.

However, after the band released details about Bono's injuries on Wednesday, it appears that the legendary Irish rocker was hurt far worse than previously thought.

According to Rolling Stone magazine, Bono was riding his bicycle through New York City's Central Park on Sunday when he swerved to avoid another rider and was involved in what doctors called a "high energy bicycle accident."

The 54-year-old musician was rushed to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center's Emergency department where he received "multiple X-rays and CAT scans" and went through 5 hours of surgery.

According to a statement made by orthopedic trauma surgeon Dean Lorich, MD, Bono suffered a facial fracture involving one of his eye sockets. He also experienced three fractures on his left shoulder blade and a fracture on his left humerus bone in his upper arm, an injury that left his bone shattered in six different places and tore through his skin.

"[Bono] was taken emergently to the operating room...where the elbow was washed out and debrided, a nerve trapped in the break was moved and the bone was repaired with three metal plates and 18 screws," said Lorich.

Bono also had a second surgery on Monday to repair his fractured left pinky finger.

Bono will reportedly need "intensive and progressive therapy" but is expected to make a full recovery.

This traumatic accident occurred approximately one week after Bono survived a scary incident on a private jet. The star was flying from Dublin to Berlin with a few other passengers when a rear door fell off of the plane, taking with it several pieces of luggage.

It's not yet clear if Bono's injury will affect U2's upcoming tour or other scheduled events.
