Darren Wilson Resigns: Police Officer Involved In The Ferguson Shooting Of Michael Brown Steps Down; Protests In Ferguson Continue To Help Communicate That 'Black Lives Are Important' [PHOTO]

Darren Wilson, the white police officer who shot and killed African American teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, has resigned from the Ferguson Police Department. According to the New York Times, Wilson has worked in the department since 2011. However, this past Saturday, he submitted a resignation letter in the hopes of helping to put the shooting behind him and help bring peace to the community.

In his letter, Wilson stated, "I have been told that my continued employment may put the residents and police officers of the City of Ferguson at risk, which is a circumstance that I cannot allow. It was my hope to continue in police work, but the safety of other police officers and the community is of paramount importance to me. It is my hope that my resignation will allow the community to heal."

Indeed, some are quite pleased with the news of the resignation. Adolphus Pruitt of the N.A.A.C.P.'s St. Louis chapter stated that the resignation "not only fulfills one of the demands of the protesters, but also provides for one of the steps necessary for the wholesale reconstructions of law enforcement in Ferguson."

However, some want more than just a resignation - they want Wilson's indictment. Local reverend Al Sharpton wrote in a statement, "We were not after Wilson's job. We were after Michael Brown's justice," conveying that justice has not yet been reached. Alicia Street, a civilian living in nearby Florissant, stated, "We want an indictment and we're still going to stand for that."

Earlier this past Saturday, protestors crowded the streets of Ferguson emulating the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1965 march in Selma, Alabama. They sang as they made their way up and down the area where Brown was shot, and trumpeters played "We Shall Overcome."

Mary Ratliff, the N.A.A.C.P.'s Missouri president, stated of the march, "It's going to communicate that black lives are important, that police officers are here to protect us...We are here to say we'll no longer stand for this."
