Kirk Douglas Looks Ahead To 98th Birthday After PEOPLE Mistakenly Publishes His Obituary

Kirk Douglas is not dead.

Mass confusion spread on Sunday after an obituary for the 97-year-old actor accidentally appeared on PEOPLE magazine's website. However, Douglas was quick to correct the publication, telling the world that he is looking forward to his 98th birthday next week.

"DO NOT PUB Kirk Douglas Dies," read the headline to the PEOPLE article on Sunday.

The obituary, which was dated Sept. 29, 2014, was clearly marked with the words "DO NOT PUB" so that it wouldn't hit the publication's website too early. However, it appears the piece couldn't be stopped.

"The announcement of my death is premature," Douglas later told USA TODAY's Andrea Mandell. "I'm looking forward to turning 98 next week."

Although PEOPLE quickly took down the article, which praised Douglas for his long career as an actor and countless achievements in American cinema, the slip-up set Twitter afire.

Most mocked the publication, criticizing PEOPLE for the hasty obit.

PEOPLE appeared to address the situation on Twitter, however, indicating that a "glitch" was to blame for the error.

"To be clear,https://PEOPLE.com  did not POST or PUBLISH the articles in question; a technical glitch caused them to surface online," tweeted the news outlet.

Nevertheless, it appears Douglas has taken the fiasco in stride. In addition to looking forward to his birthday on Dec. 9, Douglas is set to release a book of poetry called "Life Could Be Verse" on Tuesday.
