MacBook Air Retina Display Release Date: Can Apple Place A Touch ID Sensor On Its Next-Gen MacBooks?

It has been two years since the first MacBook got its Retina display, and yet the MacBook Air Retina display release date has not yet been announced.

In spite rumors of a new MacBook Air version this year, the only new version announced was the early 2014 edition, which is a slight upgrade from the mid-2013 model.

According to a report by the IB Times, it is highly probable that the new MacBook Air with Retina Display could get a Touch ID button as well. The fingeprint sensor become popular with the iPhone 5s last year, and this year the technology is now available for the iPad Air 2 and the iPad mini 3.

As a result, it will not be so surprising if Apple would include the same Touch ID for its new MacBook Air. While its use may be limited at the moment, the Touch ID button can serve as a security feature for the Mac, as well as to certify payments online thru Apple Pay.

This year, the new MacBook Airs were not launched due to the insufficient supply of new Broadwell chips from Intel. In previous reports, these chipsets are thinner but more powerful than the already energy efficient Haswell chips last year.

That feature also resulted in speculations that the new MacBook Air will be much thinner due to the absence of the fan. While touchscreen features are not the forte of Apple's laptop lineup, there were also some rumors which claim that the MacBook may finally have a touchscreen display.

We better take all of these rumors with a pinch of salt and just wait for the Cupertino manufacturer to make the official announcement, probably by Spring next year.
