Eighth Doctor In Sierra Leone Dies From Ebola Virus, World Bank Announces Recovery Plan Financing

Thomas Roger is the eighth doctor in Sierra Leone who has died from Ebola virus, Guardian reported.

Although the cases in Liberia is said to be declining, Sierra Leone cases are spreading.

The death toll according to World Health Organization is now 6,200 and infections have gone up to more than 17,500 people. Cases are mostly in the nations of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Roger is a doctor who was being treated in a British medical staff run clinic in Sierra Leone.

The clinic includes a 12-bed center, which is for healthcare workers. Guardian however reported that there seems to be reluctance from health workers to volunteer to help out in affected nations due to the raising number of volunteers getting infected by the virus.

But some doctors do recover, like Felix Baez Sarria, who was flown to Switzerland for treatment from Sierra Leone.

WHO web site described Ebola as a" severe acute viral illness often characterized by the sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat. This is followed by vomiting, diarrhea, rash, impaired kidney and liver function, and in some cases, both internal and external bleeding."

There is no known cure for Ebola but scientists are conducting experimental testing to find the drug or vaccine for the virus.

In Sierra Leone alone, the Guardian reported that there have 537 new cases in the week of Nov. 30.

Meanwhile World Bank announced that it would be assisting nations combating Ebola with $160 million two-year economic plan.

The announcement was made by

World Bank chief Jim Yong Kim was quoted by ABC as saying, "We are concerned that agricultural production has dropped significantly as a result of the Ebola epidemic and we will help farmers recover by building feeder roads that connect small farmers to markets."

"We must make sure that the Ebola epidemic is not followed by a food security crisis," he said.

"We will work to improve basic infrastructure such as urban services and access to electricity that will help the wellbeing of citizens."
