Los Angeles Dodgers Outfielder Matt Kemp Heading To Padres? San Diego, LA Set To Proceed With 5-Player Trade

News are rife that the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres have a deal set to transfer outfielder Matt Kemp and catcher Tim Federowicz in exchange for catcher Yasmani Grandal and a couple of pitchers.

An insider told Denver Post  that the Padres are bound to get about $32 million to compensate for the $107 million still left on Matt Kemp's contract with Los Angeles Dodgers, which also requires the approval of the commissioner's office. Physical examinations are still underway.

Meanwhile, Yahoo! Sports wrote that San Diego now has the obligation of paying Matt Kemp $75 million over a span of five years, making the deal the biggest in the history of the Padres. The Padres, however, will benefit much in terms of offense.

The club obviously needed a power bat for a while. In 2014, the club finished in third place in the NL West, but their batting had much to improve with an average of .226 and only 109 home runs.

San Diego has signed deals with five outfielders for 2015. Matt Kemp is expected to play either right or left fielder. It is worth noting that left fielder Carlos Quentin and center fielder Cameron Maybin of the Padres have been struggling with injuries lately.

Matt Kemp has a great batting record in the second half of 2014 for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He finished the 2014 MLB season with a .287 average, 25 home runs and 89 RBIs. The 30-year-old All-Star took home two Gold Glove awards and two Silver Slugger awards during his tenure with the Dodgers.

After his career year in 2011, Kemp signed a deal for eight years valued at $160 million, after he had a batting average of .324 and hit 39 home runs and 126 RBIs. He was second only to Ryan Braun for NL MVP.

But Matt Kemp's record is not completely clean as he also had problems with his shoulder and ankle in the past few years. In May 2014, because of his ankle surgery during the past offseason, he was trained to take on the role of left fielder since the Los Angeles Dodgers were not sure whether he could properly manage playing center field.

As for catcher Yasmani Grandal, he had the most team home runs in 2014 and had a batting average of .225.
