Vivek Murthy U.S. Surgeon General Confirmed By Senate In 51-43 Vote; ‘America’s Doctor’ Is Youngest Person Appointed To Position At 37-Years-Old

Vivek Murthy has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate to become the U.S. Surgeon General, making the 37-year-old doctor the youngest ever to be appointed to the position. The Senated voted Monday at 51-43, ending a confirmation process after President Obama nominated him a year ago in November 2013, NPR reported.

"I applaud the Senate for confirming Vivek Murthy to be our country's next Surgeon General. As 'America's Doctor,' Vivek will hit the ground running to make sure every American has the information they need to keep themselves and their families safe,” President Obama said in a statement.

“He'll bring his lifetime of experience promoting public health to bear on priorities ranging from stopping new diseases to helping our kids grow up healthy and strong. Vivek will also help us build on the progress we've made combatting Ebola, both in our country and at its source. Combined with the crucial support for fighting Ebola included in the bill to fund our government next year, Vivek's confirmation makes us better positioned to save lives around the world and protect the American people here at home."

Dr. Murthy is an MD and an MBA and he practices and teaches at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He also teaches at the Harvard Medical School. The newly-appointed US Surgeon General co-founded a clinical trials company, an HIV education organization and Doctors for America, formerly known as Doctors for Obama. He supports the Affordable Care Act.

According to ABC News, Murthy was born in England to immigrant parents. His parents are from South India but he grew up in Miami. He is known to be living a healthy lifestyle, stocking his fridge with foods like raw carrots, almond milk and high-protein grains, according to the Boston Globe.
ABC News also said that, “The young accomplished physician focuses on his work and his friends.” He is still a bachelor.
