England College Student Raises $50K For Homeless Man Who Gave Her All His Money So She Can Get Home Safely

A college student at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, England raised £32,101, or over $50,000, to say thanks after a homeless man gives the student all his money so she can have a safe ride home.

Cosmopolitan reported that Dominique Harrison-Bentzen, 22, was out at 3 a.m. then realized that she lost her phone battery, money, bank card and friends at the time. She began to panic when suddenly, Robbie, a homeless man, gave the student all his money. He offered her £3 or about $4.50 so she can take a taxi cab home.

Bentzen said, "I just couldn't believe that somebody who has so little - and that was probably everything to him - could offer it to me, a stranger that he just met."

Bentzen did not actually take his money and found another way home. She also learned that the homeless guy kept on helping others in various ways such as returning wallets to pedestrians and offering his scarf.

The student started a campaign to raise money for Robbie and also promised to spend 24 hours on the streets to understand how difficult it is to be homeless. She posted on the campaign description, "Please sponsor me $4.60 -- as Robbie attempted to give me his only $4.60. Together our small act of kindness can change someone's life this Christmas and finally get him off the streets safe and warm."

Huffington Post reported that by December 18, over 4,800 people donated to the campaign for the homeless man who gave the student all his money, helping Dominique raise around $50,000.

She provided an update, "Exciting update! Robbie's new life is within reach, for those concerned about Robbie, I can confirm he is safe, in shelter and warm whilst waiting to move into his new permanent accommodation. How amazing is that?"

Bentzen said, "It just keeps on coming in. The fundraising site keeps crashing because everybody is trying to get on to it."

Dominique added after the homeless man gave the student all his money, "I hope my campaign will help people think a little more about the people around them, Christmas is a good time to think about other people," the student told The Mirror. "If people can see what I am doing then maybe they can take the time to just stop and talk to a homeless person, hear their story."
