No, Argentinian President Christina Fernández de Kirchner Did Not Adopt Jewish Teen To Prevent Him From Becoming A Werewolf

Argentina President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner dismissed tales that she adopted a jewish teenager to stop him from turning into a werewolf.

The Independent reported that rumors circulated throughout the country that the Argentine President adopted Yair Tawil earlier in December 2014 to prevent the boy from becoming a werewolf. Based on ancient legends, the seventh son born to an Argentinian family becomes the dreaded werewolf, also known as "el lobison." According to folklore, the human boy would transform into the beast during the first Friday after his 13th birthday. The demon creature transforms at midnight every full moon and would prey on and kill humans before returning to human form.

The Guardian, however, reported that Argentina President Fernandez de Kirchner, was not following the werewolf tradition. In Argentine history, the seventh son or daughter born to an Argentine family would become eligible to become the godson or goddaughter of the president.

Before, the president would become the guardian of a Christian child. The recent adoption by the President granted such honor to a Jewish child, the son of a rabbi. Tawil became the first Jewish child adopted by an Argentine President following the tradition.

Daniel Balmaceda, an Argentine historian, stated that there is no connection between the werewolf tradition and the godson tradition.

He said, ""The local myth of the lobizon is not in any way connected to the custom that began over 100 years ago by which every seventh son (or seventh daughter) born in Argentina becomes godchild to the president."

The adoption custom started in 1907, when Russian immigrants requested then-president Jose Figueroa Alcorta to become their seventh son's godfather. The same custom was practiced in Czarist Russia. President Alcorta obliged. The practice continued until it was finally passed into law in 1974 by Isabel Peron. She also included seventh daughters in the law.

The werewolf myth started among Argentine cowboys, who got the stories from ancient European werewolf legends. In the old tales, the lobizon turns into a combination of a dog and pig every Tuesday and Friday, not just during the full moon.

Argentina President Fernandez has become the godmother, not by the werewolf tradition, to about 700 children since she took office in 2007.
