Backstrom Preview, Promo Trailer, Spoilers, And More, Rainn Wilson Shares His Thoughts On The Role [VIDEO]

Backstrom is a new cop / comedy show staring Rainn Wilson as a misanthropic, but genius detective. While the misanthropic detective bit is, well, a bit played out, it will be interesting to see what Wilson brings to the somewhat archetypal role. The show comes out January 22, here is what to expect when the show comes out.

USA Today reports that Rain Wilson said, "I almost fired him [his agent] on the spot." Then he read it and was hooked, in part, he says, because there aren't a lot of interesting parts out there "for weird-looking, 48-year-old pasty-white dudes. It was really exciting to read, and I knew I wanted to do it."

The show sums up its main character as "arrogant but brilliant," with a strong dose of "difficult." But, says Wilson, the arrogance and the issues are what drew him to the character. "It's human, it's frail, it's interesting."

"In the books, Backstrom has no redeeming values. He's not even a very good detective. He just takes credit for what other people do. Much like a show-runner. The change we made for network TV was to make him very good at his job and make him empathetic."

"We're counting a lot on Rainn's natural likability. The way he says them is kind of dramatic in a way, as if he's doing it for effect."

"People are going to have to embrace who they are in order to watch this and say 'You know what? This is damn interesting,' says co-star Haysbert. "And it is.""

Deadline reports that Hart Hanson, showrunner, said, " [Backstrom] does not come from a bad human place - it comes from a bad place in a human being."

"Backstrom would love to be wrong about the way he sees the world and every time he gets it right, he's a little bit shattered by it," Hanson explained.

Haysbert said, "People are going to have to embrace who they are in order to watch this," he said.

"I love the device that Hart has created," Wilson said. That device: a "corrosively dark world view" of the "grotesque underbelly of human condition" in which, Wilson said, his character not only gets into the heads of the criminal underbelly, but into their "hearts," "souls" and "tissue." Backstrom, Wilson said, is endowed with "a super power that is emotional and kind of spiritual," adding it's an actor's dream come true, with "lots of juicy, gooey, human stuff to play around with."

IGN reports, ""I can relate to someone whose life is falling apart and they're doing their best to use humor to get by," Wilson added. "Backstrom wears his heart on his sleeve. I would much rather hang out with that person than a slick, procedural detective who has all these quips and their CSI team looks at every fiber and the case is wrapped up each week."

"Like the ad campaign says, he's a total d***," Wilson said. "He kind of hates everybody, but he hates himself more ... He would love to be wrong about the way he sees the world, and every time he gets it right he's a little bit shattered by it. "

"We're counting on Rainn's natural likability," Hanson added. "The way he says these things is kind of dramatic, like he's doing it for effect. But what he's saying does not come from a bad human place."

"I definitely have demons and a dark side as we all do," he shrugged. "It's really a fantastic, opposite challenge to get to explore those colors after nine or 10 years of playing Dwight."
