'Selma' Cast Honors Civil Rights Movement, Marches To Edmund Pettus Bridge In Remembrance Of Martin Luther King Jr [PHOTO]

This past Sunday, Oprah Winfrey and many other members of the "Selma" cast marched to Edmund Pettus Bridge in order to mark the achievements of Martin Luther King, Jr. Hundreds of others joined them, as the recent shootings of unarmed black men have spurred calls for further reforms of the criminal justice system in the name of equality.

According to the Daily Mail, Winfrey - who produced and starred in "Selma" - marched hand-in-hand with the film's director, Ava DuVernay, actor David Oyelowo, who portrayed King in the movie, and the rapper Common. They marched from Selma City Hall to the city's Edmund Pettus Bridge, where civil rights protesters were beaten and tear-gassed by officers in 1965.

Yahoo reports that Common and John Legend performed their Oscar-nominated song "Glory" from the film as marchers reached the top of the bridge amid the setting sun.

Winfrey stated that the marchers remembered "Martin Luther King as an idea, Selma as an idea and what can happen with strategy, with discipline and with love." She continued, "The idea is that hope and possibility is real. Look at what they were able to do with so little, and look at how we now have so much...

If they could do that, imagine what now can be accomplished with the opportunity through social media and connection, the opportunity through understanding that absolutely we are more alike than we are different."

"Selma" has recently been nominated for two Oscars, in the categories of best picture and best original song. Film Jabber reports that it chronicles "Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s historic struggle to secure voting rights for all people - a dangerous and terrifying campaign that culminated with the epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, and led to President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965."
