Two Cosplayers Fined For Carrying Fake Weapons On The Street Outside Canada Anime Convention

Authenticity and craftsmanship are two things that diehard cosplayers prioritize whenever they make plans for their next convention.

But is there a such thing as ‘too authentic' when it comes to weapons?

Perhaps that is the case for two Cosplayers who were fined $270 for carrying their realistic firearms and wearing military fatigues on the street outside of the Gatineau Anime Convention in Gatineau Quebec. According to reports, government workers near the event spotted the two male cosplayers and subsequently alerted the authorities in fear that the weapons were real.

"I just heard someone running in the hallway saying, ‘Oh my God, someone's on the phone with police. There's two guys with guns in the parking lot,'" said Marie Ouellette to Metro News.

"We're kind of on alert, especially when the shooting happened downtown and we were on lockdown for several hours. It's still kind of fresh in our minds."

According to Metro News, the official twitter account for the G-Anime Convention later informed its attendees to keep their cosplay outfits that resembled anything dangerous concealed until fully inside of the convention.

This is not the first time in which realistic cosplay has caught the attention of police. In fact, the results were dire for 22-year old Darien Hunt who was reportedly shot and killed by police officers for brandishing a samurai sword while cosplaying as Mugen from the popular anime series "Samurai Champloo."

Perhaps these previous situations lead to the statement by Canadian comic book store owner and VP of the convention Rob Spittall that has the men been cosplaying as military members with guns in the United States they could have been killed by the police.

According to Anime News Network a nearby convention in Ottawa changed its own policy about weapon replicas after a shooting occurred at Parliament Hill and the National War Memorial. The shooting resulted in the death of Canadian soldier, Corporal Nathan Cirillo.

The G-Anime Convention was held this year on Jan. 24 to Jan. 26.
