It looks like CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan have been feeling extra generous lately. According to CNN, the couple recently donated $75 million to San Francisco General Hospital, which is believed to be the largest single private gift from individuals to a public hospital in the United States.

TIME reports that the donation will go towards the "rebuilding" of the hospital, as well as towards funding equipment and technology. By December 2015, a new nine-story, 453,000-square foot main hospital and a new trauma center will be set in place.

The donation didn't come out of nowhere - Chan actually worked for years at the facility's trauma center during her pediatric residency. She was impressed with the fact that the hospital was a "safety net" hospital, or a hospital where more than 70% of patients are underinsured or uninsured. She also took notice of the hardworking staff.

She stated, "Day in and day out, I witness the compassion and dedication of my colleagues as they work tirelessly to deliver the best available care to all of our patients. Mark and I are proud to support such an important public hospital."

Zuckerberg added, "We are so fortunate that our work in connecting the world through Facebook has given us the ability to give back to our local community, our country and the world - and to work to improve education, health care and internet access for everyone. To serve our community in San Francisco, we can think of no better place to focus than The General."

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee gave the couple thanks, stating, "It's incredibly gracious they have recognized the importance of this hospital to the entire city. They have made sure, in the future, there will be enough money to maintain and modernize it. They want a public hospital as important as this to be at world-class standards every year."

CNN reports that in light of the Zuckerberg's generous donation, the hospital is in the process of being renamed the Priscilla and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.
