Museums Ban Monopods Or Selfie Sticks For Safety Reasons; Will Other Tourist Attractions Soon Follow?

Regardless of how helpful monopods and selfie sticks are in taking photos, these devices might soon be banned from key tourist attractions. Several museums have recently banned the use of the extended sticks in an attempt to protect the artworks as well as to not distract other visitors.

As per The New York Times, there is a "growing battle between museums and technology." Such battle prompted museums to find ways that will prevent accidents from taking place.

Some of the museums that have expressed interest in banning monopods include MoMA, Getty Museum, the Vatican, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Museum of Sex, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Museum of Fine Art in Houston, Cooper Hewitt, the Guggenheim, and even the Met.

"We are pro-selfie, just not pro-selfie stick," says Metropolitan Museum of Art's Chief Digital Officer Sree Sreenivasan. As per Sreenivasan, visitors using selfie sticks might become too absorbed in taking the "perfect" selfie that he or she ends up knocking into fellow visitors or even a prized work of art.

For example, Sreenivasan says, a visitor might try to take a selfie with the Temple of Dendur but instead ends up falling into a pool of water.

It can be remembered that in 2010, a woman merely taking an adult education class at the said museum lost her balance and fell into Picasso's artwork, "The Actor." The fall caused a tear on the canvas that was about six inches as per the New York Times.

National Gallery of Art Spokeswoman Deborah Ziska further explained to the Washington Post why the selfie sticks are being banned.

"Anything that might swing around, we ask people to check them at the coat room. It's about safety of the art, and in a crowded situation, safety of visitors."

Getty's Assistant Director of Media Relations Julie Jaskol also echoed Ziska's sentiments.

"Photography is allowed indoors. Selfie sticks are restricted out of concern about damaging the art or people in more enclosed spaces."
