Floyd Mayweather News: Money Pressured To Fight Manny Pacquiao Due To Declining PPV Numbers? Does It Show How Unexciting His Fights Have Become?

Floyd Mayweather was the one who gave the go signal to Manny Pacquiao's camp that the fight is indeed happening. Rumor has it that Mayweather was forced to face Pacquiao to pull his PPV numbers up.

According to Veteran boxing analyst Larry Merchant, undefeated boxer Mayweather Jr. felt obliged to agree to fight the Filipino ring icon Pacquiao since his recent pay-per-view fights have not delivered, rating wise.

"My guess is that there was pressure on Mayweather, because of his declining pay-per-view numbers, more so than on Pacquiao's pay-per-view numbers because of the contract guarantee he has from Showtime," Merchant told Hustle Boss.

If fans can remember, Mayweather hit the jackpot when he signed a lucrative six-fight deal with Showtime in 2013. He battled with Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, Marcos and with Maidana twice, all resulting to a win. Of all those matches, the fight against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in September 2013 was the most fruitful. The others drew lesser figures in the box office.

His May 2 super-fight against Pacquiao already increased his PPV numbers as the fight was sold out in 15 minutes. The fight is expected to break all box office records and Showtime is poised to regain losses that they may have incurred from Mayweather's other fights.

"I think that probably made him a little more open to various pressures," said Merchant. "That's in general what I think of."

"But I'm not going to complain, because it's finally happening," he added.

Merchant also stated the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, which have kept the world craving for five years, is an event that "theoretically, spans the globe" and "transcends the sport."

"Hopefully, the fight itself lives up to the high expectations of it," he also said.
