"The Vampire Diaries" star Paul Wesley has taken the directorial hat several times for the CW series and recently, his co-star Ian Somerhalder also got the opportunity to direct an episode. Nikki Reed's fiance revealed that his on-screen brother helped his directorial debut.

"Paul is a phenomenal director. Actually, I absorbed a lot from Paul and he was really great with his information," Nikki Reed's fiancé told ET Online. "One thing that Paul and [creator] Julie [Plec] have is they've known this show since its conception."

Even if he described his experience to RYOT as a "volley between being a kindergarten school teacher and mathematician," he told ET Online that directing was easy because of his closeness with the cast members.

"Being able to talk to a team with shorthand and without any ego is really important. It saves a lot of time and energy that you typically would otherwise be spending on etiquette," explained the 36-year-old actor.

"We fire off of each other and it's filled with nothing but love and the idea to get it done as quickly, and as beautifully, as possible."

"The Vampire Diaries" actor Ian Somerhalder also told RYOT that the real magic of directing an episode is "understanding how to manage personalities and use them to empower those personalities to work in the most efficient, creative, and happiest way possible."

In "The Downward Spiral," fans saw a different side of Caroline because she opted to turn off her humanity following the death of her mother. Stefan likewise did the same. Fans learned that Damon and Stefan's mother was also a vampire who faked her death so that she could escape her family and murder people in Europe.

Like "The Vampire Diaries" star Paul Wesley, Somerhalder hopes that his directorial debut will lead to other opportunities in the industry.
