K-Pop Double Take is a weekly review column highlighting recent releases that have yet to receive the attention we feel they deserve.

Practically without exception, if a K-pop song opens with somber piano chords it is a death knell for anything danceable or fun. It signifies what follows is to be "important," serious music, delivered in a painfully earnest manner.

Which is precisely why "Till The Night Is Over," from the album "Time For Love," released in January by South Korean hip-hop artist Zzapa, is such a standout track.

Using a relatively generic minor piano progression, Zzapa carves out a groove that is unique and downright funky.

The piano hooks and orchestral samples blend together nicely on "Till The Night Is Over," dialing in a texture recalling the 1970s electric recordings of Herbie Hancock that played such a strong role in 1990s East Coast hip-hop.

But what really keeps this song flowing, are the flawless vocals from Zzapa. Both the rapping and singing performances on "Till The Night Is Over" are powerful but also laid back. With a confident soulful delivery, vocally, the sound is pure R. Kelly; Zzapa knows how to get a party started.

While the rapping brings the ruckus as well, it is more difficult to pin down. A multi-talented performer to be sure, as an MC, Zzapa clearly has carved out his own niche.

On "Till The night Is Over," as with the rest of the songs on "Time For Love" the signs all point to a restless performer searching for the sound that suits him the best, a classification that becomes even more believable when you consider he has now released two EPs since debuting in August.

When he finds that sound, now that should be serious.
