After responding to a house fire in Fresno, the 25-year-old fire captain got on the roof to help ventilate the roof. However, the rooftop caved under his weight and he fell into the building, just as flames erupted from below.

Firefighters scrambled to save the veteran fire captain.

"To watch one of our own be so significantly hurt is a traumatic event," said Fresno fire Battalion Chief Todd Tuggle.

Onlookers screamed, while others, like retired marine Joe Reyes, jumped in to help.

"We could hear people screaming. We could hear people running in trying to help," Tuggle said. "We could hear several folks trying to direct traffic, trying to keep bystanders out."

"I didn't hesitate. I just went to help the firefighters, knowing what was taking place, the horrific scene that I'd seen," Reyes said. "I helped with them kicking the hoses, removing the trash cans, even cutting the cable from the garage door."

Firefighters saved their fellow brave firefighter in just three minutes. He survived the event, and was rushed to Fresno's Community Regional Medical Center.

He had second- and third-degree burns on 65 to 75 percent of his body. His wife and family are reportedly by his side at the hospital. Dozens of others gathered to the hospital to show support for his courage

"Very traumatic time for the fire service and for the Fresno Fire Department," said fire Chief Kerri Donnis. "We are a family, brothers and sisters, and as you can see here, we rally around each other."
