2016 Chevrolet Malibu 'Game Changer' In Midsize Sedan Category

Introducing the 2016 Malibu, Chevrolet's latest offering in the midsize four-door sedan category.

The all-new model now sits 2.3 inches longer, with 3.6 inches added to the wheelbase, and weighs 300 pounds less than the previous model. Its completely redesigned exterior features sleeker angles, a new grille, and revised front & rear lights.

It will only be offered as a sedan and in four trims: L, LS, LT and Premium.

Under the hood, a 1.5 liter four-cylinder engine that has an output of 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Things get more interesting with the 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine that produces 259 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque that is coupled with an all-new eigh-speed transmission. Available is a 1.8 liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that works with a two-motor electric drive powered by an 80-cell, 1.4 kWh lithium-ion battery.

The interior boasts an additional front-seat hip room and rear-seat legroom along with Chevrolet's MyLink system that is displayed on a 7-inch color touchscreen (available in LS, LT and Hybrid models).  A bigger 8-inch display is available in the premiere trim. As a standard, all models will have OnStar 4G LTE with a WiFi hotspot.

Safety features include Lane Keep Assist, Parking Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Pedestrian Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert, and adaptive cruise control.

It will also feature the Teen Driver system, a device that, when engaged with a PIN code, syncs specific keys used by young drivers, allowing parents to monitor and limit vechicle activity. The device records the maximum speed reached, distance driven, and the number of times safety features are engaged. It also automatically mutes the radio if seatbelts aren't fastened.

GM estimates that the 2016 Malibu will be able to make 27 mpg (city) and 37 mpg (highway) on the standard 1.5 liter engine. With the 2.0, however, GM claims that it will manage 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway.

The 2016 Cherolet Malibu is expected to hit showrooms in the fourth quarter of the year.
