Emma Stone, Seth MacFarlane Announce 2013 Oscar Nominations

Oscar host Seth MacFarlane and actress Emma Stone announced the nominations for the 85th annual Academy Awards at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills this morning .

Director Steven Spielburg's Lincoln, a biopic about 16th president of the United States, leads the way with 12 nominations, narrowly edging out Ang Lee's visually stunning Life of Pi. The fantasy shipwreck tale surprisingly received 11 nominations. Zero Dark Thirty and Les Miserables, both of which were considered potential frontrunners, also earned multiple nominations, as did Silver Linings Playbook and Argo

History was also made today by 9-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis and 85-year-old Emmanuelle Riva. The two became the youngest and oldest nominees, respectively, to receive best actress nods. Wallis starred in the indie underdog fantasy Beasts of the Southern Wild - she was only five when she shot the movie - and Riva starred in the critically acclaimed Austrian drama Amour. Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty), Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook), and Naomi Watts (The Impossible) rounded out the nominations for the best actress category.

Best actor nominations went to Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook), Hugh Jackman (Les Miserables), Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln), Joaquin Phoenix (The Master), and Denzel Washington (Flight).

Nine films received best picture nominations, a field that can include as many as 10 or as few as five movies. This number depends on a complex formula of ballots from the 5,856 voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The 85th Academy Awards will be broadcast live on February 24, 2013 on ABC.
