Kristen Stewart Joins Meryl Streep; Calls Hollywood "Disgustingly Sexist"

Kristen Stewart recently opened up about her experience in Hollywood, calling the industry "disgustingly sexist."

In an interview with Harper's Bazaar U.K., the "Twilight" actress was asked about what it was like being a woman working in the film industry in the United States.

"Women inevitably have to work a little bit harder to be heard," she told the magazine. "Hollywood is disgustingly sexist. It's crazy. It's so offensive it's crazy."

In the interview, the 25-year-old does not provide specific examples to support her statement.

Aside from Stewart, a slew of actresses have recently denounced the sexism that they claim is rampant in Hollywood. Meryl Streep and Patricia Arquette have both come out to condemn this practice in the industry.

Recently, British actress Carey Mulligan opened up about the lack of roles for women in the film industry.  "In terms of the amount of interesting roles there are for women it's obviously massively sexist," Mulligan said in an interview with Time Out London, as quoted by The Guardian. "There's a lack of material for women. A lack of great stories for women."

Streep, who is Mulligan's co-star in her new movie "Suffragette," give her own take on why the industry is the way it is.

"This active empathy that women go through from the time we are little girls, we read all of literature," the Oscar winner explained during a panel. "All of history. It's really about boys, most of it."

"But I can feel more like Peter Pan than Tinkerbell or Wendy," she went on. "I wanted to be Tom Sawyer, not Becky. And [women] are so used to that active empathizing with a protagonist of a male-driven plot. "

"That's what we've done all of our lives-you read history history, you read literature, Shakespeare," she added. "It's all fellas. But [men] have never had to do the other thing."
