Are Meredith Grey And Alex Karev The Endgame Of 'Grey's Anatomy' Now That Derek Shepherd Is Dead? Mourning Episode Receives Polarizing Reactions

After the post-Derek death "Grey's Anatomy" episode, fans appear conflicted to the future of the ABC series. But, could two of the show's original characters—Alex Karev and Meredith Grey—actually get their happy ending?

The latest "Grey's Anatomy" episode saw a time-jumping emotional roller coaster ride following the sudden demise of Derek Shepherd. Fans, still recovering from the grief of losing such a beloved character, saw the episode with mixed reactions.

"Last week, and all throughout the next few days, it seemed like the show couldn't really go on, and we couldn't go on watching it," wrote E! Online contributor Lauren Piester.

"What was the point if Meredith—who was the show's heart and soul from the very beginning—couldn't ever get her happy ending? And that was what this episode was answering. Now, in theory, the show can start anew. We don't have to spend episode after episode wondering if everyone will make it out of this grief OK, wondering if Meredith's pregnancy will go well, wondering if Amelia will manage to stay on the wagon even through losing her brother. Everything that happened in that episode could have been stretched through all of next season, and we would have hated it."

But what is actually in store for Meredith now that Derek is gone? What about her romantic life? Some fans have some theories after viewing the latest episode.

"I think it's kind of logic that now will be Meredith and Alex the endgame," wrote J2020 on The Hollywood Reporter.

"I mean, probably at some point they will use a story on how Alex never tried to hooking up with Mer, but with every other girl, because he always had feelings for her and everything."
