Kristin Wiig To Appear in ‘Anchorman 2'; 'Couldn't Be More Excited'

It's kind of a big deal.

Former ‘Saturday Night Live' cast member Kristin Wiig has signed on to play the wife of mentally challenged weatherman Brick Tamland (played by Steve Carell) in the upcoming sequel to the riotous comedy ‘Anchorman,' according to the magazine US Weekly.

In ‘Anchorman: The Legend Continues,' Wiig will appear alongside Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Christina Applegate, David Koechner and Steve Carell, all of whom will reprise their roles from the 2004 film.

Adam McKay, the director of both of the Anchorman films, confirmed the news Monday night on his Facebook page.

"Kristen Wiig is officially on board for Anchorman 2," McKay wrote. "Couldn't be more excited."

Applegate, who plays Ron Burgandy's love interest and fellow news anchor Veronica Corningstone in the films, took to Twitter to express her excitement.

"So excited Kristen Wiig has joined our cast for anchorman2," Applegate wrote. "Going 2 b best movie ever made. Besides the best movies ever made."

Depicting the trials of a San Diego local news team during the era of women's liberation, the original film featured cameos and minor roles played by several stars whose careers were about to take off-namely Seth Rogan who played a cameraman and Jack Black who portrayed a demented motorcyclist who tosses Burgandy's beloved dog off as bridge.

Actor Steve Carell'sz career also took a star turn shortly after the film.

The ascent to superstars for several of the cast members was apparently a major reason for the delay in making the sequel, despite the legions of Anchorman fans clamoring for its release. According to The Playlist, Paramount feared the film's $60 million budget would be too expensive a risk to take on a sequel for a film that only grossed $85 million domestically.

In the years of development for the sequel, the project has taken several forms, including one plan to make it a musical. According to McKay, some aspect of that concept will remain.

"There will be some music in ‘Anchorman 2′ though for sure, we have some songs already written," McKay told The Playlist. "We were going to do ‘Anchorman 2′ as a Broadway musical first, for like six months and then go shoot the movie. That was our initial idea. [There will be] whole song sequences, absolutely."

The film is scheduled for a December 20 release. Until then, fans will have to wait to see if the sequel to Anchorman will produce the same parade of catch phases such as, "You stay classy San Diego," and "By the beard of Zeus!"
