'Pacific Rim 2' Slated For Aug. 4 Release Date; Charlie Hunnam Out, New Foreign Characters In?

"Pacific Rim 2" will be arriving two years from now and as of the moment, director Guillermo del Toro is reportedly at the stage where he is weeding out characters from the first film who have finally completed their goals.

In a report by IBTimes, Guillermo Del Toro hinted that "Sons of Anarchy" star Charlie Hunnam might not be back for "Pacific Rim 2."

"We are taking the characters into a completely different journey this time because Raleigh for me solved his problem the minute he was able to go full circle and save Mako by sacrificing himself, which is what he couldn't do with his brother," he said. "He's not on that journey anymore; he's on a new journey."

While in another report by Movie Pilot, Hunnam has yet to sign a contract that will cement his return for the next installments. The website further added that there is an option being considered that they might kill off his character the way they did with his brother. Since Del Toro said he accomplished his goal in the first movie, they see it as a fitting end for his character.

Meanwhile, he said in a separate interview with Collider that he is planning to bring in new faces for "Pacific Rim 2." Also, he hinted that they might be foreign actors who will probably be introduced as new pilots for the Jaegers.

"I'm hoping to bring the same idea I had in the first movie and that was to make it multicultural and humanistic as much as possible, to make characters from many nationalities or gender, to make them equal in the scope of the adventure, in the day-to-day of the adventure," said Del Toro.

"Pacific Rim 2" is slated for an Aug. 4, 2017 release date.
