Adam Silver Says San Antonio’s Becky Hammon Has A Legit Shot Of Becoming First Female Coach

Will fans finally see the day where a woman is calling the shots for an NBA team? The answer is leaning towards yes as San Antonio Spurs assistant head coach Becky Hammon is showing why she could be the first to be named one.

Hammon spearheaded the San Antonio Spurs summer league team to a championship this year and with that feat, started talks of her possibly helming an NBA team, or even the San Antonio Spurs once legendary coach Gregg Popovich retires.

In fact, NBA commissioner Adam Silver told Yahoo Sports that he was able to exchange texts and emails with Hammon and the female coach expressed her gratitude for letting her show what she's got in a world of men.

''No different than for me in coming up in my career, unless you're given those opportunities, you're never going to show your ability to be successful,'' Silver said. ''So I'm enormously proud of her and I'm enormously proud of the players who've quickly seen that she's a top-notch coach and have been willing to follow her.''

Hammon was a renowned WNBA player who played for the New York Liberty and ended her career with the San Antonio Stars.

Adam Silver believes that Hammon paved way for other women to see that they have a place in the NBA.

''I think just like we've seen enormous change in our society, just in the last decade, I think that's another ceiling, another barrier that will be broken,'' Silver said. ''And it takes women like Becky being out there.

''You need pioneers and there's been other pioneers before her, but I think you couldn't ask for more of a complete package in terms of former player, student of the game and someone who's able to work within a strong organization like the Spurs.''
