Houston Rockets News: Team Revolutionizing D-League As A Place Of Honing Talents

The NBA Summer League is over and for die-hard basketball fans, there are probably talents that are fun to watch that they will see once the D-League starts. Good news is, players will get their chance to showcase all their skills as more and more teams show interest in purchasing a developmental team.

According to Jake Fischer of Sports Illustrated, players who performed really well during training camps won't have to worry as the teams they played for will be able to retain their services.

"The NBA has increased the number of players that teams can cut from their training camp rosters and still hold onto their D-League rights," a league spokesman told SI.com. "The change was initially installed prior to the 2014-15 season."

"NBA teams can now waive four training camp invitees (up from three) and make those individuals 'affiliate players,' providing the player signs a D-League contract and the two sides typically agree to a potential D-League allocation as part of their training camp contract."

The website added: "The process allows players to avoid entering the D-League draft pool and provides franchises with exclusive D-League rights to those players. However, if a team does not own the players' NBA rights via the draft, the player is available to sign an NBA contract with all 30 teams."

With that said, teams are now clearly paying attention to how vital the D-League could be in terms of honing talents. Moreover, it looks like they will follow the path of the Houston Rockets as the franchise has been successful in molding talents such as Troy Daniels two seasons ago, and Clint Capela during the postseason. Daryl Morey spoke with ESPN.com's Calvin Watkins to discuss the development of both players.

"Last year, he [head coach Kevin McHale] really worked and developed Troy Daniels, who gave us good minutes in the playoffs. He was a big part of that Corey Brewer trade, so unfortunately we couldn't keep Troy," Morey said.

"But Clint is another guy Coach McHale has worked with all year and has been grooming to give us minutes, but frankly most of us felt that it was going to be in the future. But for him to really step up the way that he has is a testament to his work ethic and how much time he's put into both practice and the games and with his [D-League team]."
