Apple's LGBT Support Significant; Details From The Introduction Of The 'Light Of Equality Act Of 2015' Revealed!

Apple has shown its LGBT support by backing the bill introduced to Congress on Thursday that sought to outlaw discrimination against members of the LGBT community under federal law.

Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and other members of the Congress introduced Equality Act of 2015, which would ensure that people couldn't be discriminated against based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. The law would apply to employment, housing and other rights of LGBT people.

The bill is practically an amendment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that prohibits discrimination because of race, color, religion and national origin, Wired reported. The Equality Act covers the 31 states that don't already extend the same rights to their LGBT citizens.

Congressman John Lewis, who is one of the original Freedom Riders of the 1960s, expressed his opinion concerning the Equality Act on Twitter.

"I fought too long & too hard against discrimination based on race & color, not to fight against discrimination based on sexual orientation," he said.

Aside from the bill's 155 co-sponsors in Congress, one of the most powerful businesses in the world, Apple, has given LGBT support.

"At Apple we believe in equal treatment for everyone, regardless of where they come from, what they look like, how they worship or who they love," said Apple in a statement to Human Rights Campaign. "We fully support the expansion of legal protections as a matter of basic human dignity."

This kind of support from Apple shouldn't come as a surprise, given that its CEO, Tim Cook, has been outspoken on issues of discrimination. Incidentally, Cook is the first openly gay CEO of a Fortune 500 business.

Cook has also backed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act that prohibits employers from discriminating against members of the LGBT community.

According to Deena Fidas, director of the Human Rights Campaign's workplace equality program, the Equality Act of 2015 is broader in the protection it offers; thus, a support from one of the world's tech leaders is so significant.

Aside from tech giant Apple's LGBT support, The Dow Chemical Company and Levi Strauss & Co. have put their support behind the bill, too, according to CBS.
