San Antonio Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich Says Becky Hammon Signing Is Not A Gimmick

San Antonio Spurs assistant head coach Becky Hammon is having the time of her life as the NBA community is starting to acknowledge her work as a head coach.

Just recently, the former WNBA player won the 2015 Summer League championship with the San Antonio Spurs team.

Some might be wondering if this was just some of Gregg Popovich's surreal experiments but the legendary head coach clarified that Hammons is more than qualified to take on the job and that this is by no means a 'gimmick.'

"You know, it became huge when we hired her, and now it's even bigger, because of the Summer League situation," Pops told Yahoo Sports. "I hired her because she was in my coaches' meetings for a whole year because she was injured, and she's got opinions and solid notions about basketball."

The head coach further added that even during her playing days, Hammons showed great knowledge as her basketball IQ was on full-display playing the point guard position for the New York Liberty and San Antonio Stars.

"Obviously, she was a great player, and as a point guard, she's a leader, she's fiery, she's got high intelligence and our guys just respected the heck out of her," Popovich said. "She's out on the court, she's coaching with us, she's running drills. And so that's why we made her a full-time person, and that's why I gave her the opportunity to coach in Summer League."

The head coach stressed that gender is totally not an issue with regards to signing of Hammon.

"I don't even look at her as, 'Well, she's the first female this or that or the other.' She's a coach, and she's good at it," the head coach said. "I think some people thought, 'Well, this is some sort of a gimmick, they're just trying to be cool,' or whatever. I'm glad she's there."

Moreover, NBA commissioner Adam Silver believes that Hammons has a shot of coaching an NBA team in the future.

''I think just like we've seen enormous change in our society, just in the last decade, I think that's another ceiling, another barrier that will be broken,'' Silver said. ''And it takes women like Becky being out there," Silvers told Yahoo Sports.
