‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ Script In The Works Says Lionel Wigram; Main Cast Interested To Return

A third installment in the "Sherlock Holmes" film franchise is in the works says producer-writer Lionel Wigram, ComicBook.com reports.

It has been almost four years since the release of the last "Sherlock Holmes" film ("A Game of Shadows"), which starred Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, but now, according to reports, a third film in the franchise is in the works.

On an interview with IGN, Wigram, who produced and penned the script for the classic detective films based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novels with the same title,  discussed the two previous films and revealed that he and the team behind "Sherlock Holmes" are currently developing the script for the third movie.

"We're working on a 'Sherlock Holmes 3' script," Wigram tells the media outlet. The filmmaker further says, "I think we ould all love to do one if we can come up with something that really was [really] going to knock it out of the park and was going to be the best of the three."

According to Cinemablend, though Wigram is striving hard to make an even more kickass "Sherlock Holmes" film, he admitted that it is proving to be a challenge to write a script for it.

Other then penning the script for "Sherlock Holmes 3," Wigram also said that Downey Jr. and Law as "very, very interest" in reprising their roles as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson respectively in the upcoming movie, according to ScreenRant.

However, if the actors are interested in returning for their roles, Wigram did mention anything about Guy Ritchie returning on the directorial seat for the third movie.

"Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" has had a rather cliffhanger ending where everyone assumed that the sleuth is dead after falling into a raging waterfall with his opponent, Professor Moriarty, but then, Dr. Watson received a parcel from Holmes and the last part of the film showed the detective sitting on the couch in his camouflage.

It seems likely that another film will be coming up to finally explain the hero was able to survive.
