Cleveland Cavaliers News: Tristan Thompson Gone By Next Season? Will LeBron Opt Out As Well?

The Cleveland Cavaliers were not able to secure a long term contract for budding forward Tristan Thompson and he will sign a qualifying offer for one year with the team. This means, he will be an unrestricted free agent next off-season and he will be free to sign with any team he chooses.

Thompson's Agent as well as LeBron's, Rich Paul made the announcement via several media outlets.

"If [Thompson] is on the qualifying offer, [this] will be his last year with the Cavs," he said via ESPN.

This could spell trouble for the Cavs as all teams in the league next year will have a massive increase in their cap spaces. This could also mean that they could throw in as much as $20-25 million just to acquire Thompson's services. As explained by ESPN's Brian Windhorst:

"The other is the fact that more than 20 teams are projected to have cap space for a max-level free agent next summer, making it the best summer to be a free agent perhaps in the history of American professional sports," he wrote. "In a market awash in cash, that may mean multiple max offers if Thompson has even an average season by his standards."

However, the Cavs must make the necessary arrangements to re-sign the forward as franchise star LeBron James thinks highly of Thompson. It is worth noting that LeBron signed a two-year deal with the second year being a player-option. Better keep the King happy.

As stated by James via Chris Haynes of the Northeast Ohio Media Group last month. "Tristan should probably be a Cavalier for his whole career," James said. "There's no reason why he shouldn't. This guy is 24 years old. He's played in 340‑plus straight games, and he's gotten better every single season. It's almost like, 'What more can you ask out of a guy?'"
