Psy's Controversial Title For New Song: On Purpose Or Just A Misunderstanding?

There is absolutely no denying that 'Gangnam Style' launched Psy's international career. As we have probably all heard by now, it is the most popular YouTube video of all time at almost a billion and a half views. Surely that is a hard act to follow.

And now, with the whole world anxiously waiting for Psy's next single release next month, many are wondering if it is even possible to top the 2012 hit.

Part of what made "Gangnam Style" so popular was the comical video and signature horsey dance. It probably didn't hurt that some English lyrics were thrown in, making it a bit more accessible to the global community.

But the new single, if it hopes to be even remotely as successful, is going to have to pull out all the stops; it will need to further revolutionize the way we think about music.

"Gangnam Style" has already changed how music is judged, with Billboard's announcement last month that they will now take YouTube views into consideration when compiling their ranked lists.

To make Psy's next song release a hit, he has to make it unique somehow. We can already imagine the lyrics will be imaginative and the choreography fun, but what will take it over the top?

After initially releasing the title for the new track as "Assarabia," the Korean rapper returned a few days later saying he would change the title as it appears offensive to the Arab community. While the song has nothing to do with a certain body part or a geographical location, the romanization of the word (which actually means something akin to 'thrilling') led to a significant misunderstanding. Not wanting to upset his fans, he decided to rework the song, changing not only the title, but some of the lyrics as well. Nice guy, right?

Well, not everyone agrees.

It has been suggested that the release of the controversial title and subsequent retraction was exactly the plan. Some have insinuated that Psy planned the situation to get people talking about the song before its release next month as a way to boost interest and assure that curiosity will get the best of everyone and they are going to want to see it even more.

Makes sense - everyone loves a good scandal, and as the record shows, Psy does have a knack for controversy. Two of his four albums have been censored in Korea due to language and content, he was reprimanded for not serving the full length of his mandatory military service, and he has a drug charge for smoking marijuana.

But can we really say that the misunderstanding was orchestrated to increase the song's popularity?

All things considered, this opinion seems very narrow, and shows little understanding of not just the Korean language, but of Psy himself.

It really seems unlikely that Psy would invest all that time writing and perfecting a song only to have to go back and drastically change it less than a month before it is scheduled to debut. Furthermore, anyone with a basic understanding of Korean phonics would know that the 'American' pronunciation of the word varies greatly from the way it is said in Korean.

It is pretty safe to say that this is a rhetoric issue and not some grand scheme to enhance the song's popularity.

We cannot say for sure if the new single will be able to top the popularity of "Gangnam Style," but while it does seem unlikely, we can certainly expect to see something very unique and equally entertaining.
