FB Messenger Overtaken By WeChat App? Tencent Invests $50M In Kik To Take Over U.S.?

The messaging app WeChat, developed by the Chinese internet giant Tencent Holdings ADR, has reportedly overtaken Facebook Messenger.

According to Bidness Etc, the unstoppable rise in popularity of the application could be attributed to its laudable features.

What is notable about it is the fact that it has rolled several services of Google Play and iTunes into one application. Among these are its capacity to get a doctor's appointment or pay utility bills right through the app.

Moreover, the article stated that its success can be attributed largely as well to its capability "to create a new app within its app" and it can be used as a company account or as an artist's platform to reach out to his or her followers all over the world.

With this kind of innovation, the WeChat app was able to generate 1.10 billion registered accounts, a feat that might be regarded as a big proof that it has already toppled over WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, which have 800 and 700 million registered accounts, respectively.

Another whopping success of Tencent's messaging service was the growth it posted in just a matter of eight months since it was launched late last year; from only 500 million active users to 549 million.

Meanwhile, Kik founder and CEO Ted Livingston announced on Medium that the WeChat app maker has invested $50 million in their company.

"They had significant success and resources, allowing them to have the patience required for Kik to pursue a long-term vision for a chat-based ecosystem," the executive said.

"And with so much of their focus on winning China, they would support Kik running independently to win the US," he added.

Livingston revealed that the negotiations started last year when Kik's board raised if getting a joint venture agreement with a big company will be of advantage to them.

"At first I was hesitant. I was confident we could win the race alone," he confessed. "But, keeping in line with Kik's principle of considering all the options, I eventually agreed to take a look."

With the partnership of Tencent and Kik, it is expected that the WeChat app as well as the Kik Messenger would even do better in the chat race.
