Pope Francis Upgrades Catholic Marriage Annulment Process As Kim Davis Refuses Resignation

It's been an interesting month for the state and discussion of marriage, and Pop Francis is joining that conversation by revolutionizing the Roman Catholic marriage annulment procedure.

According to Reuters, Pope Francis simplified procedures such as the previously mandatory review of an annulment by a second diocesan tribunal. Reportedly, the decision came to him so that Catholics who sought annulments would not be "long oppressed by darkness of doubt" over whether it would be declared null and void.

"The pope is seeking to respond pastorally to the tens of thousands of couples who are experiencing profound pain and alienation as a result of broken marriages," said Father James Bretzke.

Speaking to Monsignor Pio Vito Pinto, dean of the Vatican court that rules on annulments, the new changes would be the most substantive since the papacy of Benedict XIV from 1740 to 1758.

The recent actions by Pope Francis make an interesting foil for Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who is in jail for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses.

According to CNN, Davis' legal team is filing appeals to the US Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals to take her name off the license, which would reportedly accommodate her religious beliefs.

"If (Davis' deputies) can issue licenses under someone else's authority, Kim Davis would not stand in the way of that," said Davis' attorney Roger Gannam.

Despite her jail time, Davis' "spirits remain high," according to another one of her attorneys, Horatio Mihet.

"She was brought to tears when she heard that so many people outside the jail and around the country are praying for her," he said.

Reportedly, Kim Davis is "willing to stay in this jail as long as it takes in order for her to win back her constitutional rights not just for her but for Americans of all faiths."
