LA Lakers News: Rookie D’Angelo Russell Talks About Chances Of Him Winning Rookie Of The Year

In less than two months, fans will finally get to see how the rookies of this year's draft will fare in their first season in the league.

Aside from the #1 overall pick Karl-Anthony Towns, eyes will be on D'Angelo Russell as he is seen as the successor of future Hall-of-Famer, Kobe Bryant.

With regards to that, he spoke with Basketball Insiders and he shared how the support of fans is making it easier for him to make the transition.

"I feel the love from fans already," Russell told Basketball Insiders. "My fan base has grown enormously, starting with draft night. My social media following [which is now over 211,300 Twitter followers] has gone up a lot since being drafted by the Lakers."

Not only that, he already got an endorsement deal from Nike, which makes it apparent that he is indeed seen as one of the NBA's future stars.

"I am so happy to have the opportunity to work with Nike," Russell said. "Their technology and products are the best in the game. I always wanted to be part of the Nike family and I am honored to represent them on the court."

Then, he was asked if he believes he will take the Rookie of the Year award over the likes of Jahlil Okafor and KAT.

"Of course," Russell said. "I have been grinding all summer to put myself in that position."

He also said that he believes his team is currently a playoff contender and he is excited to kick-off the season.

"Expectations are high," Russell said, "but this Lakers squad will most definitely be a playoff team."

"I'm excited to play everyone," Russell added. "Really, I just can't wait to get on the court."
