Houston Rockets News: Ty Lawson And Patrick Beverley To Battle For Starting Spot Says Coach Kevin McHale

Just when everybody thought that Ty Lawson will easily be the new starting point guard for the Houston Rockets, head coach Kevin McHale wants them to think again.

Ty Lawson has been known as a borderline All-Star who can score easily and has excellent passing skills while Beverley came to his own and built a reputation of being an elite lockdown defender.

In an interview with Jonathan Feigen for the Houston Chronicle, McHale confirmed that when training camp begins, both players will be evaluated fairly and there, they will decide who between Lawson or Beverley will be the better fit in the starting line-up alongside James Harden and Dwight Howard.

"They'll determine that," McHale said right before the three new unis for the Rockets were revealed. "We'll find out. Can we play them together? Maybe. We'll put them out there. We had 28 days of camp. We'll decide who will get the lion's share of the minutes. One will and one will be a backup."

"Ty last year had a very average year in Denver compared to what he had done before," McHale said. "(Former Nuggets coach) George Karl runs a little bit more of an open offense like we run here, get up and down, attack. We want Ty to do what he does best, get in the paint, make plays for others, scoring."

The two point guards present a contrasting style and rotation for the Rockets. However, it might not come as a surprise for Beverley to start over Lawson as the Rockets already present two ball-dominant player in the starting line-up in Howard and Harden.

Lawson, meanwhile, would likely be the scoring punch the Rockets will need off the bench together with Corey Brewer and company.
