Google Not Allowing Android Pay To Run On Rooted Devices? Google Wallet Lives On!

With the release of Android Pay early this month, many users have been asking if such payment system could run on rooted devices and Google Wallet would still continue.

According to Tech Times, Google engineer Jason Clinton "thinks" that the company will not allow the new online payment system to run on devices with customized ROM or those rooted.

"For those wondering if Google will permit rooted devices to run Android Pay, the Google engineer thinks it's unlikely but adds that this is strictly his opinion," the tech site stated in its report.

The engineer revealed that Android Pay and Google Wallet's systems are structured differently, his basis for his opinion.

"Google is absolutely committed to keeping Android open and that means encouraging developer builds," he shared.

"While the platform can and should continue to thrive as a developer-friendly environment, there are a handful of applications (that are not part of the platform) where we have to ensure that the security model of Android is intact."

The Google engineer explained that Android Pay's structuring is "stricter" considering that transactions involve alternate payment networks, credit unions and banks.

Meanwhile, Google Wallet "does not deploy the SafetyNet API" to do a compatibility test suite or CTS.

He further noted that the older system has the capacity to "gauge the risk of a potential transaction" before an authorization of the payment is given.

In the meantime, the Wall Street Journal blog reported that Google is not letting Google Wallet go despite the presence of Android Pay.

While the older payment system is considered to be "Google's clumsier, prior attempt at smartphone payments," the tech giant "isn't killing off the Google Wallet brand entirely."

It was learned that with Android Pay around, the Google Wallet has been repackaged to compete with other cash-swap apps like Venmo, Square Cash and Pay Pal.
