San Antonio Spurs News: David West Shares Why He Would Take Vet Minimum With SA Over Others

The San Antonio Spurs are all geared up to compete for another title next season as they boast the most impressive haul from last off-season in veterans LaMarcus Aldridge and David West.

Both players exchanged huge money for the chance to win a title, and that says a lot about the culture of the San Antonio Spurs. But, between the two, West was the one with a lot to sacrifice heading into next season.

The former Indiana Pacers forward forego $11 million just to play for a winner. He was entitled to receive $12.5 Million should he exercise the third year option of his contract. Instead, he decided to go with the $1.4 Million veteran minimum offer from the Spurs.

What made him do it? He is simply that much of a role model. In fact, he is so down to earth that he looks up at Tim Duncan everyday at practice.

"I find myself staring at Tim," David West told Yahoo Sports. "I have just been trying to find little corners to watch him - and I just stare at him."

"People are talking about what I gave up," West told the sports website, "but not as much about what I've gained here."

At this stage of his career, it is very impressive for West to prioritize learning over earning. In a few years time, he will call it a career but he believes what he have right now is simply priceless.

"I needed be in an environment where I can really learn again," West said. "We've got a few guys older than myself, and I can actually look up and ask questions again."

"That's something I haven't been doing the last few years. You had to focus on your own mindset and mentality and then having to make sure that others are where they need to be. When you're constantly answering questions, I'll admit: It gets to be a bit much."
