Anime News Network reports that the movie project will be a completely new anime work written by original creator Reki Kawahara. In addition, the film will be directed by Tomohiko Ito, who previously directed the TV anime series and previous anime special. A-1 Pictures will again handle the animation production.

More information about the "Sword Art Online" anime movie will be released on Oct. 10 in the next issue of Dengeki Bunko Magazine.

"Sword Art Online" was originally a light novel series by Reki Kawahara. For those who are not familiar with the series, My Anime List describes "Sword Art Online" as follows:

"In the near future, a Virtual Reality Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (VRMMORPG) called Sword Art Online has been released where players can control their avatars through brain waves using technology called 'NerveGear'."

It goes on:

"When players enter the game, they discover they cannot log out, as the game creator is holding them captive. To escape, players must beat the game by defeating each boss on all 100 floors; however, if they die in the game, they die in real life too. Their struggle for survival starts now."
