Dallas Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban Suggests NBA Supplemental Draft; How Does It Work?

In an effort to improve the league further, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban says a supplemental draft will be a good idea to give chance to players not drafted as well as further develop each team's D-League rosters.

The suggestion is based from the result of the recently concluded draft as huge number of undrafted players (44) was signed to contracts while the number of draftees that are under contract are just 41.

With that said, teams can use a supplemental draft to boost the talent in the D-League as well as making it more reasonable for each team to have their own D-League team.

"I would have a supplemental draft every summer for undrafted free agents of the current and previous 3 years," Cuban wrote in an email to Hoops Rumors. "If you are more than 3 years out you are not eligible and just a free agent."

The supplemental draft will work similar to the NBA Draft. It will have two rounds and teams will be able to keep the rights to the player for two years and let him play in the D-League team. Each player will be entitled to guaranteed league minimum contracts and others will be paid $100k.

According to the innovative owner, this will make things more exciting around the league and will also help better selections in the summer league rosters.

"That would make it fun a few weeks after the draft and pre-summer league," Cuban wrote. "It would prevent some of the insanity that goes on to build summer league rosters."

According to Hoops Rumors, Cuban has already discussed the idea to some of the league officials but there aren't anything official as of the moment.
