'Star Wars: Han Solo' Movie Announced For 2018; 'Fault In Our Stars' Actor Ansel Elgort Reportedly Playing Title Role

Walt Disney has officially announced a Han Solo spin-off movie for 2018.

"The story focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley," according to the Disney's official press release.

"22 Jump Street" directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will be directing the upcoming "Star Wars" stand alone film.

"We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us," Miller and Lord said in a statement.

The two will be collaborating with veteran writer Lawrence Kasdan whose credits include the screenplays for "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi." Lawrence's son, Jon, will co-script the film.

"It's not just any filmmaker who can tell the story of such a beloved icon like Han Solo, and I'm excited to say we've found the perfect team to handle the task," producer Katheleen Kennedy said in a statement. "Larry [Lawrence] and Jon know all there is to know about the character, and Chris and Phil will bring their wit, style, energy and heart to tell Han's story."

Chandler Riggs (The Walking Dead), Logan Lerman (Fury) and Ansel Elgort (The Fault In Our Stars) have all been rumored to portray the young Han Solo in the film.

2018's Han Solo movie marks the third "Star Wars" film to come from Disney since they purchased the rights to the franchise from Lucasfilm in 2012.

"Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens," the latest installment to the long-running saga is directed by J.J. Abrams and is set to release this year on December 18.

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," the first spin-off film of the series will release on Dec. 16, 2016. It is helmed by "Looper" director Rian Johnson.

The "Star Wars" Han Solo movie is slated for a May 25, 2018 release.
