Facebook App For iPhone Contributes To Massive Battery Drain; Tips On How To Prevent It

Apple recently introduced iOS 9 to the public and in it is the new feature for iOS users to conserve battery life via the low power mode option.

However, iPhone users still complain about a massive battery drop, which is believed to be caused by the Facebook app.

In a report by BGR, the Facebook mobile app may constantly "steal" power and quickly drain the battery of your iPhone because of the background app refresh feature.

According to the report, by leaving this feature on, the social media app constantly abuses the use of VOIP backgrounding, audio backgrounding or content-available push notifications taking most of your device's energy.

Nick Heer of Pixel Envy reacted to a Pixel Envy post by Matt Galligan, saying how even when the app is closed the iPhone still gets a battery drain of at least 15% because of the Facebook app.

"Despite having background app refresh disabled, because the app isn't 'sleeping' properly when I hit the home button, it continues to drain," Galligan said. "That extraneous background usage, despite not providing any value to me at all, is keeping the app alive 2x longer than my actual usage."

"Make no mistake: this is user-hostile," Heer replied. "Facebook is actively creating channels to continue refreshing their app in the background when the user has explicitly stated that they do not want it to. Ironically, the best way to reduce the battery and data consumption of the Facebook app in the background is to switch Background App Refresh back on. Better still, remove the Facebook app from your phone, and perhaps replace it with [Facebook's U.S.-only] Paper."

Furthermore, Federico Viticci of Mac Stories added how it would be better to just turn on background app refresh or even delete the Facebook app on your iPhone to possibly further prevent the battery drain it has been causing.

"Make no mistake: this is user-hostile," Viticci wrote. "Facebook is actively creating channels to continue refreshing their app in the background when the user has explicitly stated that they do not want it to. Ironically, the best way to reduce the battery and data consumption of the Facebook app in the background is to switch Background App Refresh back on. Better still, remove the Facebook app from your phone, and perhaps replace it with Paper (US store only)."
