Manny Pacquiao Tells Bob Arum He's Retiring Next Year; Last Fight Scheduled On April 9, 2016

It looks like Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao is dead serious on his campaign to become a senator in the Philippines and eventually, become its next president.

Pac-Man is currently seated as Congressman representing his home town, Saranggani, General Santos City. However, he has the lowest attendance among all congressmen and he plans to turn things around when he becomes a senator.

Now that he's nearing the twilight zone of his career, Pacquiao told Bob Arum that April 9 2016 will be his last day boxing and the promoter is fully supportive on his fighter's future endeavors.

"Manny told me this fight on April 9 will be his last fight," Arum said via Daily Mail. "I'm telling you what he told me last week at dinner in New York. We talked very seriously and he said, 'Bob, hopefully, by the middle of May I will have been elected senator in the Philippines and at that point I cannot engage in boxing because I need to focus on the senate and I have to be in attendance."

The task ahead is something that can't be balanced with boxing and both of them knows that very well.

"There are hundreds of congressmen but if he wins the senate seat he has to be there to do the work," Arum said. "It's a real job and if Manny is serious about wanting to be president, these six years in the senate would be like an audition and for him to show his people that he really is a serious politician."

Arum knows the consequences should Pacquiao proceed doing both fields. He said that his mental acuity might be in jeopardy if Pac-Man keeps on boxing.

"Manny told me this would be his last fight and I'm not sad about it because he's going on to a political career which will require a lot of mental acuity, so you don't want him to stay in boxing too long. If he stays in boxing a little too long his mental faculties might be somewhat impaired," Arum said.
