‘Terminator: Genisys’ Sequel May See Light of Day; James Cameron To Regain Franchise By 2019

The prospects for a "Terminator: Genisys" sequel now appear to be bright.

This, after confirmation that James Cameron will regain the rights to the highly-popular sci-fi franchise by 2019, according to Movie Pilot.

The award-winning director has been acknowledged as the brains behind the success of the "Terminator" series, having helmed the film's first and second installments.

The Canadian filmmaker, however, made a major mistake when he sold the rights to the franchise for a measly amount before the movie was even released.

To this day, despite the fame and success he has achieved over the years, the 61-year-old director has been quite vocal about how he regretted the decision he made way back in 1984.

"I wish I hadn't sold the rights for one dollar. If I had a little time machine and I could only send back something the length of a tweet, it'd be - Don't sell," Cameron said.

After losing the copyright to the movie, "Terminator" bounced from one major studio to another who wanted to cash in on the lucrative franchise.

This resulted in the succeeding films' lack of a cohesive, overarching plot, which included "Terminator: Genisys" whose sequel was put on hold due to negative reviews and poor showing at the U.S. box-office.

Although the "Avatar" director hasn't officially announced his plants to do a sequel to "Terminator: Genisys," he seemed to be happy with the direction being pursued by the franchise.

"It might be fun to completely re-invent the franchise," Cameron said via Empire, pointing out that "A lot has to do with what happens with it in the meantime, people may have 'Terminator' fatigue.

"But I'm just visiting Earth tonight; I normally live on Pandora, where I work!" he added.

Despite the underwhelming performance "Terminator: Genisys" at the U.S. box office, the film earned more than $440 million worldwide, reported Forbes.

And regardless of the negative press received by "Terminator: Genisys," it is the second-highest grossing film of the entire franchise, which should give producers a huge incentive to do a sequel.
