20 Questions With The Members Of LUNAFLY: The KPopstarz Exclusive Interview

When K-pop trio LUNAFLY released their debut album "Super Hero" back in September, fans knew they weren't some teen idol group.

LUNAFLY is a fully-functioning band, composing nearly all of their original material--which is performed in Korean and English--and playing their own instruments.

The band also stands out with their trademark acoustic sound.

LUNAFLY fans around the world have a lot to look forward to from bandmates 19-year-old Han Seungyun (Yun), Shin Taeho (Teo), also 19, and 25-year-old Sam Carter (Sam).

KPopstarz was fortunate enough to get some time with the guys of LUNAFLY, who agreed to answer 20 questions. Here's how the interview went.

KPopstarz: How has the sound or band dynamic of LUNAFLY changed since your debut?

Yun: We have been experimenting a little since our debut. We debuted with quite an acoustic sound, but nowadays we play around with synth and electronic sounds.

KPopstarz: Is there a genre of music you guys would like to explore in your music?

Teo: We don't really want to limit ourselves in terms of music genre. We would like to maybe try some more rocking songs as well as songs that people can dance to. But what is important to us is to keep our identity and color.

KPopstarz: What do you feel is the best song you have recorded?

Sam: "Clear Day, Cloudy Day" or "How Nice Would It Be" were definitely songs that we were proud of when we recorded them. And also our newest song "Fly to Love" is a song we are very proud of. It's nice to hear people sing along to these songs.

KPopstarz: What is your favorite song to cover?

Sam: "Just the Way You Are" by Bruno Mars is one of our favorite songs to cover. It has great melodies and vocal harmonies.

KPopstarz: Do you prefer to have fans quietly enjoying your performance or do you prefer them to be loud? Describe your ideal crowd.

Yun: Well, when we sing slow, sad songs it's nice to have people quietly watching. But with up-tempo songs we like fans to scream, shout and sing along with us.

KPopstarz: What other artists influenced the sound of your new album?

Sam: The new album has a wide variety of influences. Artists like The Beatles, Westlife, The Backstreet Boys, will.i.am, Train and many more, influence us in our song making.

KPopstarz: Were there any memorable moments while you were recording it?

Teo: Well, whenever we record and make songs we usually end up moving into the studio for a week. So one memory would be sleeping on sofas and washing with cold water! It was tough at times, but we are proud of the album because we put our blood, sweat and tears into it.

KPopstarz: Which artist would you most like to collaborate with?

Sam: I would love to collaborate with will.i.am. He is a true artist who experiments a lot with his sound.

Teo: Jamie Cullum, as he inspired me to play piano.

Yun: John Mayer inspired me to sing and play guitar.

KPopstarz: How did you guys meet? What were your impressions of each other?

Sam: When I first met Yun and Teo and was impressed with their piano and guitar playing skills. After a few practices together, I realized that we could possibly write some special songs.

Yun: When [Teo and I first] met Sam we were afraid we wouldn't be able to communicate properly with him because he is from England and we weren't sure how good his Korean would be. But his Korean is very good and we have no real communication problems.

KPopstarz: What made you decide to form LUNAFLY?

Sam: The inspiration behind LUNAFLY I guess came when we were looking at the moon and realized that people look at it with many different emotions and views. We wanted to express these different emotions and views in our songs.

KPopstarz: Describe your relationship with each other as band members? Is it more of a business or a friendship?

Teo: It is certainly a friendship that we all have with each other. We spend literally 24-hours-a-day together and have become close.

KPopstarz: When did you first decide you wanted to pursue a career in show business?

Sam: Well, I have always wanted to be a singer and use my creative side. As a child, I played violin and liked writing songs. So, I was around 7 when I realized I wanted to do music.

Teo: I decided as a late teenager that I wanted to become a singer and play piano.

Yun: After watching John Mayer as a young teenager, I realized I wanted to sing and play guitar.

KPopstarz: How different are your on-stage personas from how you are in real life?

Sam: They are the same! Teo is very lively and talkative onstage which is how he is in real life. I like to make fun of Teo and Yun is a little quiet which is how we are onstage and in real life.

KPopstarz: What kind of students were you guys in school?

Sam: I liked school and tried hard to get good grades but I was especially good at music and sports.

Teo: I was a good student who always got good grades.

Yun: I didn't like school.

KPopstarz: What is the toughest part of being famous?

Yun: The toughest part is that because we are so busy we don't really get to see our families and friends much. But because we are doing what we love we are able to handle that.

KPopstarz: What direction would you like to see the band go in, musically and beyond?

Teo: Musically we want to write different kinds of songs to what we have done before but also some songs with that acoustic vibe we debuted with. We want to be a band that is performing often and all around the world.

KPopstarz: You made your first broadcast music program appearance on the website Ustream on March 14. What was that experience like for you?

Teo: It was a lot of fun. We got to meet artists that we admire and it was nice for our fans to see us on such an important stage I think.

KPopstarz: Do you see yourself as connected with the international K-pop scene?

Sam: Well, we make huge efforts to make sure our international fans don't feel like that they're so far away. We regularly upload cover songs, release English versions of our songs and we also have [our own Ustream channel] LUNA Music TV. I am also now a radio DJ with my own show on Arirang Radio for international listeners. So we try to stay connected.

KPopstarz: What is the favorite memory you have so far of being in LUNAFLY?

Teo: Our favorite memories would be all of our performances in front of our fans and especially our concerts in Japan, Indonesia and Malaysia. We can't wait to have more.

KPopstarz: What's next for LUNAFLY?

Yun: We have a concert coming up in Singapore [next month] and we have plans to go to Japan again. And hopefully, we will release another song very soon.
