Preparations Are Underway For The 19th Annual Korean Dream Concert In Seoul: Fans Upset About Seating Arrangements

The Korean Dream Concert is one of the biggest K-Pop events of the year and has routinely included a large number of idol groups performing together on one stage. This year marks the 19th anniversary of the iconic music event and 21 different groups have already been added to the lineup.

The 2013 Dream Concert will be held on May 11 at the World Cup Stadium in Seoul. Tens of thousands of fans are expected to attend this year's performances, and, as with the trend of recent years, will come in from all over the world. Last year's Dream Concert welcomed fans from Japan, China, the Middle East, and South America who came to cheer on their favorite K-Pop groups. It is no wonder, then, that the event organizers consider the massive idol concert to be at the forefront of the hallyu wave.

No broadcast date has been determined for the event as of yet, but in the past it has aired on Korean television as well broadcasted abroad in places like Japan and the Philippines. There has been some speculation, however, that this year's event may involve some sort of live online stream.

For this year's concert, many high-profile groups have signed up to perform. On the tentative list are Girls' Generation, KARA, B2ST, T-ARA, Secret, SHINee, SISTAR, INFINITE, 4Minute, ZE:A, EXO, Rainbow, BTOB, Speed, B1A4, Girls' Day, Evol, and VIXX. It is also rumored that both 2PM and 2AM are trying to coordinate their touring schedules so they will be able to perform at the Dream Concert as well.

With so many famous idols set to join the show this year, one cannot help but notice it seems dominated by SM Entertainment and the smaller labels. If JYP's power boy groups 2PM and 2AM ultimately cannot attend, that means two out of the three major labels have no presence at the concert. There is a definite lack of YG groups, and that is rather disappointing. Furthermore, it would be nice to see the addition of some different genres as well - what about K-hip-hop groups or the quirky indie bands? Do they somehow not fit into the "Korean Dream"?

Furthermore, a proposed seating arrangement for fan sections has been spreading around the internet over the past couple days. Many fans are upset by the large areas sectioned off for SHINee and B2ST, saying the are for SNSD fans is too small and that the other idol groups and singers have disproportionate sections.  EXO, for example, has come under some negative attention for the size of their fan area, with other groups' followers insisting it is too large for a rookie group.

It has been noted, however, that the Dream Concert's fan sections do no generally reflect the size of the fandom, but rather the number of fans expected to attend the show.  Although this point has done little to calm the enraged fans.

The Dream Concert organizers have said that the 2013 show will launch a new brand name for K-Pop in the world music industry in preparation for next year's 20th anniversary show. Wouldn't, then, it be a good idea to showcase the versatility of Korean music by presenting a diverse and unified front? If the goal of this year's Dream Concert really is to rebrand the K-Pop image, perhaps incorporating some different styles and perspectives would be a good idea.
