SBS Renews 'K-Pop Star' For A Third Season: Who Will Be The Next Akdong Musician?

South Korean television network Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS) has confirmed that the singing competition 'K-Pop Star' will return for a third season, prompting the question: who will become the next Akdong Musician.

"'K-Pop Star 3' has been confirmed and is expected to change its usual time slot to Friday," a SBS spokesperson told the website allkpop on Wednesday. "But since there are still five months left until it is supposed to air, the time slot of the show has not been finalized yet."

The reality show's season three premiere is currently scheduled for September.

The SBS spokesperson said the issue of when exactly "K-Pop Star 3" will air has to do with the network's drama-packed weekend schedule

"'K-Pop Star' usually airs for 90 minutes per episode, so it is unlikely that the show will be able to fit into the 60-minute opening between weekend dramas," the SBS representative said. "The show has a higher chance of airing on Friday nights."

If the show does air in the Friday timeslot it is possible it will be go head-to-head against rival singing competition Mnet's "Superstar K5."

News of the return of "K-Pop Star" for a third season came less than two weeks after vocal duo Akdong Musician was crowned the show's second season winner.

The brother-sister band, who currently have a top ten hit on the Billboard Korea K-Pop 100 with "Foreigner's Confessions," were modest when discussing their "K-Pop Star 2" win.

"I didn't know we would come this far," Lee Chan Hyuk said, according to the website Soompi. "Thank you mother and father."

Lee's sister Lee Soo Hyun was equally humbled by the victory.

"I feel like...we don't belong here," she said.

Five days after their win, Akdong Musician told the host of SBS Power FM 'Young Street' radio that they would be returning to Mongolia to spend time with their parents.

"Both my brother and I exhausted a lot of energy," Soo Hyun said. "We want to rest. And it's been over a year since we were home, so we want to go visit home...we're going to be riding horses and eating Mongolian food."

Although raised in South Korea, Akdong Musician's missionary parents moved to Mongolia two years ago.

Their father Lee Sung Geun has been chaperoning his children in South Korea throughout the competition.

"I plan to return with my children to Mongolia on the 20th," Sung Geun said. "There is no special reason for the leave. I think my children need a break because they have become very exhausted due to their hectic broadcast schedule."
