Psy Tells Billboard Magazine The 'Harlem Shake' Craze Made Him Say To Himself 'I'm Down, I'm Nothing, I'm Stuck'

Psy opened up about the moment the "Harlem Shake" became the new internet craze, and his breakthrough video "Gangnam Style" was old news, in an interview published on Friday by Billboard Magazine.

"I was shocked with the 'Harlem Shake,' because at that time I was preparing a new single," Psy recalled.

"Most artists feel the same way when they are preparing something, because they are not doing anything: 'I'm down, I'm nothing, and I'm stuck.' At the same time, 'Harlem Shake' came out and everyone did the 'Harlem Shake' dance. Every media outlet kept saying, 'goodbye 'Gangnam Style. Hello 'Harlem Shake.'"

The King of K-pop also discussed being a bit surprised by all the thumbs downs he got on YouTube for his new music video "Gentleman."

"It has a lot of likes and a lot of dislikes [on YouTube] at the same time-a lot of fans and a lot of haters," Psy said about his hotly-anticipated follow-up.

"You can't make everybody feel inspired. Both sides should exist. But with 'Gangnam Style,' most of the country didn't have any haters with the video, with the music and with the dance moves. That was abnormal. So literally, I was used to an abnormal situation, and one day I considered the abnormal situation to be the normal situation. I was spoiled with all of the likes and fans."

The South Korean rapper admitted that the instant "Gentleman's" instant popularity, breaking the record for the most views in its first day, with 18.9 million, gave him a false sense of security.

"I released the "Gentleman" video and the first day, second day, third day everybody seemed to like the video," Psy said.

"So the spoiled side of me was like, 'okay, this one works.' But on the fourth day, as is normal and understandable, given that it's a culture product, there were a lot of dislikes. So, now things are back to normal for me. And I really like this situation."

K-pop biggest international star discussed the accidental nature of the "Gangnam Style" online phenomenon.

"I was not familiar with the internet thing," Psy explained.

"Honestly, you know with all kinds of internet media, I was not that familiar. I was not that kind of guy. Accidentally "Gangnam Style" happened and you have YouTube and all other sorts of stuff like Facebook and Twitter and so on."

And although he has broken two Guinness records for online views, ("Gangnam Style" is the most viewed internet clip in history with 1.6 billion views) he admits that learning how to fully harness the potential of the Internet is something he has had to work hard at.

"After [the success of 'Gangnam Style'], I learned and learned," Psy explained.

"I learned how to use Facebook, how to use Twitter and how to use YouTube and how to use all those platforms with each other. By this time I've realized like, wow this really is a big deal. This is another kind of a new show. I'm kind of a classic guy. I really play for old school songs, older songs and the platform and media. I was that kind of person."

Psy will be appearing this Sunday as a presenter at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas.
